In summer, making the most out of the day and getting up at dawn enables you to see the city without the crowds. Whilst some places are better with many people to create the atmosphere (eg, Times Square), things such as buildings (Empire State) and other landmarks (high line, ground zero) could be seen early in the morning, no crowds for pics and also escape the heat of the day if you rest during the afternoon, and head back out in the evening.
